In Cookstown, North Ireland, Maggie O'Shay at age six, plays with her sisters, Paulie and Lizzie and their rag dolls, having many adventures in their back yard. Meanwhile their older brother Pius torments them with unending jealousy and spite. Financially poor in the early years, their father becomes successful in construction when the building boom hits Ireland. Pius is a pivotal influence in Maggie's life as she tries to protect her sisters from his evil intentions.
As the family becomes more successful, they move into a large Manor house. Maggie takes great comfort on a nearby mountaintop, a safe retreat throughout her childhood. She finds a friend, Auntie Maeve, who consoles her through all her trials and tribulations with Pius, plus the ups and downs of life. An evolution of mind and spirit lead Maggie into the light, sure of herself and her life path
